5 Ways to Kickstart Your Metabolism


Metabolism is a tricky thing. Some people are born with faster ones then others. And if you are one of those people, it’s a lot easier for you to lose weight or maintain then it would be for someone whose metabolism is working against them. Your metabolism converts what you eat and drink into energy. This can speed up and slow down really at any point. Think of it as a chain, it you’re missing just one link: it can slow down. However, through diet and exercise there are definitely ways to help the process. I’m not stating that if you do these things tomorrow your metabolism will automatically turn on that flame and burn those calories, but with consistency and motivation: they definitely will help.


  1. Eat more to lose weight

            Seriously. I don’t know what the hype is with extreme calorie restriction. Calories are fuel for your body, you need them! Eat smaller meals every 3-4 hours for a steady blood sugar level and to rev up that metabolism.


  1. Water, water, water

            Drinking about 64 ounces of water a day can increase your resting metabolism by about 50 calories a day- that may not seem like a lot but it’s enough to lose about 5 pounds a year: just by sipping on water all day!


  1. Get your Zzz’s

            Turn off your phone, TV, tablet, anything with a screen about an hour before you go to bed. Remember that a good night’s sleep is extremely important for weight loss and weight management. Try aiming for about 6-8 hours for a full nights rest.


  1. Eat healthy fats

            Yes do it. your body needs fats, but make sure you’re getting it from healthy sources like avocado, olive oil, fish, nuts, nut butter, etc. These healthy fats will prevent against buildup of plaque in your arteries and prevent belly fat. All fats have 9 calories per gram as opposed to protein and carbs at 4 calories per gram, so as a general rule of thumb stick to about 25% of your overall calories for fat.   1. Just Move

            Daily exercise will get your metabolism running while you’re working out and even hours later. One study showed that inactivity for 4 hours or more causes a near shutdown in an enzyme that controls your fat burning. To keep this enzyme active, make sure to do something during long periods of inactivity to move your body, it’s important for your metabolism and fat burning ability.  As well as the more lean body mass you add to your body the more calories you will burn at rest!
