5 Ways Alcohol Is Wrecking Your Fat Loss

There is no disputing the fact that excessive alcohol consumption will wreak havoc on your fat loss plan. While this is a pretty universally known fact, not many people understand exactly why this is.

Listed below are five reasons that throwing back a couple beers or shooters can also set you back in terms of progress and fat loss.

  1. Ask yourself this: in terms of macronutrients, is alcohol considered a carbohydrate, a protein, or a fat? Most people would assume that it falls under the category of carbohydrates. However, alcohol is actually in a category all of its own. While protein and carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram, and fat has 9 calories per gram, alcohol has 7 calories per gram. That’s almost twice the amount of calories per gram found in your carbs and proteins, and only 2 calories per gram less than fats.
  1. Not to mention the fact that alcohol is completely devoid of all the nutritional benefits you may find in your healthy sources of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. In addition to having 7 calories per gram of alcohol, most alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, cocktails, and flavored spirits also have carbohydrates which adds to their total caloric value even more.
  2. Because your body identifies alcohol as a toxic substance, it puts all other metabolic processes on hold in order to process that alcohol. So that fat burn that was just taking place in your body due to your hard work and diligent macronutrient counting was just put on hold entirely while your poor liver works overtime to get all the bad stuff out so your body can function optimally.
  3. The more you drink, the lower your inhibitions go, and the more likely you are to give into your cravings. Face it, nobody wants to eat a salad when they’re drunk. Being intoxicated makes you so much more likely to reach for cheesy, fatty, and sweet things that should be saved for your cheat meal when you are actually conscious enough to thoroughly savor and enjoy them.
  4. The fat loss hindering effects of alcohol carry on into the next day, too! Alcohol is detrimental to your sleep quality, and causes those nasty hangovers which usually turn into a day of lounging around and bingeing on junk. While some people can hit the gym after a night of drinking, they are never going to be as productive as they would have been if they had taken it easy!

It’s unrealistic to abstain from alcohol forever. Social events and celebrations happen and that’s ok! Drink in moderation most of the time but understand that It’s ok to have one of those occasional crazy nights with your friends. Just don’t start forming habits, and understand that anything you put into your body is going to affect you in some way, either negatively or positively.
