Labor Day Festivities: A Survival Guide

Labor day weekend is a great way to say goodbye to the summer months by spending quality time with family and friends. However, these seemingly innocent celebrations can wreck havoc on those macro numbers. Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure that you are enjoying your time without hindering your progress!
 
1. Bring Food
Not only does it make you look like a wonderful guest, this handy little tip will save you from the endless platters of hot dogs and hamburgers. Double points if you bring something savory AND sweet :-) Some healthy ideas to consider: burgers made from lean ground turkey or beef, veggie burgers,chicken breasts, lean meats or fish, shrimp cocktail, veggies and dip, turkey meatball appetizers, salads, fresh coleslaw, fruit platters, popsicles, watermelon, etc.
2. Stay Hydrated
Keep drinking water! Especially if you are outdoors for the majority of the day. It will hydrate and energize you, and help you feel more full and satisfied. Stick to water, but some other healthy options could be fruit-infused water, seltzer, (polar brand pink grapefruit seltzer is incredible FYI) and homemade smoothies and juices. If you must drink alcohol, make sure you are tracking it and not going overboard. Remember to have at least 8 oz. of water for every drink you have.
3. Rise and Shine
If you have a busy day with family and friends ahead of you, make an effort the night before to set that alarm clock extra early. That will give you time to maybe sneak in a gym session or an at-home workout, or get started on a healthy, protein-packed breakfast for yourself and the rest of the family! Start the day off strong and you'll find it easier to stay on track for the rest of the day.
4. Take Advantage of Mother Nature (Weather Permitting)
If it's nice outside, get moving! Whether it be swimming, hiking, biking, yard games, a stroll on the beach, a morning run, etc, get yourself and your family and friends involved! This is a great time to take advantage of the beautiful weather we get towards the end of the summer.
 
5. Track and Plan Ahead of Time
Don't fall off the bandwagon! Keep up with your MyFitnessPal or LoseIt. If you can, plan ahead of time what you are going to have to eat and drink. However, if something impromptu comes up, don't let being caught off guard mess you up! Track it and make adjustments as the day goes on.
